Stephen Suber, MusD, Lauded for Excellence in Music and Music Education

HAMMOND, LA, April 28, 2023 - Stephen Suber, MusD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dr. Suber earned a Bachelor of Arts from Principia College, where he studied under Reinhart Ross. He subsequently advanced his studies at Mills College with Robert Ashley and Terry Riley, earning a Master of Arts in music in 1974 before completing his formal education with a Doctor of Music in Composition from Indiana University in 1982. Toward the end of his studies at Indiana Bloomington, Dr. Suber had the privilege of being appointed to the faculty, serving as a Visiting Lecturer in Composition.

A seasoned composer, Dr. Suber has composed music for various media, accompanied songs and choral works, including one for a 32-part chorus, and has created music for unaccompanied solos and large chamber orchestras alike. Throughout his career, he has been privileged to have his work heard in venues all over the world, largely in the southeastern United States and Europe. In addition to his "Symphony: Of Wind and Light," which was recognized at the Indiana State University Orchestral Composition Contest in 1983, Dr. Suber was awarded a residency at The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico, where he wrote portions of "Enchantments: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which was commissioned by the Louisiana Music Teachers Association.

Alongside his work as a composer, Dr. Suber has served as a professor of music at Southeastern Louisiana University since 1982. In order to remain aware of ongoing changes in the field, he aligns himself with the American Composers Alliance, Broadcast Music Institute, the Society of Composers and the American Composers Forum. In light of his professional expertise, he has been awarded on numerous occasions, earning a Composer of the Year Award through the National Music Teachers Association in 1993. Looking toward the future, Dr. Suber intends to continue working at Southeastern Louisiana University until his retirement.
