September 09, 2022 - The editors of JancisRobinson.com have selected Charlie Leary's article, "Retama and regeneration: A memory of the Desert of Almeria appellation," as a finalist in the 2022 wine writer's competition. Leary's first-person essay recounts his efforts at regenerative viticulture in Andalusia.
JancisRobinson.com is among the world's most prestigious and widely read wine publications. Voted the world's most influential wine critic in polls in the US, France and internationally in 2018, editor in chief Jancis Robinson views herself as a wine writer rather than a wine critic. She writes daily for JancisRobinson.com and weekly for the Financial Times. She is founder-editor of The Oxford Companion to Wine, co-author with Hugh Johnson of The World Atlas of Wine (4.7 million copies sold just before the 8th edition was published in October 2019) and co-author of Wine Grapes, each of these books recognised as a standard reference worldwide. The 24-Hour Wine Expert (2017) is a slim paperback guide to the practical essentials of wine.
Leary focuses on best practices for regenerative viticulture by focusing on retama, a leguminous shrub that grew on his vineyard site. He also addresses the history of wine growing in Almeria, a province in Andalusia. Leary describes the unique terroir, history, and attributes of the appellation.
Winners will be selected by September 21, 2022. There are prizes based on both a reader's poll and the selection of the site's editors. The reader's poll is currently open for voting on the website.
Charlie Leary writes about wine for a variety of publications, including Jane Anson's Inside Bordeaux and Sommelier Business. He was previously a wine and food columnist for the Halifax Chronicle-Herald. he lived in Spain for 18 years and has earned numerous wine certifications, including Spanish Wine Specialist, Cave Expert, and Certified Sherry Wine Specialist. He holds a PhD in history from Cornell University.
