New Novel Launches on National Moonship Day

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - May 21, 2021 - A lot of white lightning flows through Lisa Angle's debut novel "Whiskey and Old Stogies," so it's only appropriate its launch date falls on National Moonshine Day, June 3, 2021.

This Southern Gothic style story reflects the influence of novelists such as Robert Morgan ("Gap Creek") and Ron Rash ("Serena"). In 1920s North Carolina young Rufus leaves his family knowing nobody will miss him. He carries haunting secrets buried deep in his memory. When he falls in with the O'Haras he believes he found a home.Running moonshine leads him to dark places where he encounters rough culprits.

The book opens with, "Back in them days I didn't knowed the first thing boutwhiskey." Yes, you read that correctly. Angle wrote the novel in first person using the main character's distinct dialect. To prepare the reader for the immersive experience, Angle offers a guide at the beginning with examples of words the reader will encounter.

"I tried to stay as true to Rufus's voice as possible without confusing the reader. Although, at times that became challenging," Angle said. "I write better about things I don't know than I do about things I do know. So I did a lot of research."

Angle sets her stories in the South but she grew up in Santa Barbara, California. After college she wrote feature articles and press releases. In the new millennium she dabbled in storytelling through film, produced the documentary "Ablitt House Journey," and co-produced "Thirty Years of Literary Excellence" about the history of the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. Through her company, Ninety Degrees Media, she helps others write and sell their stories. She serves on the boards for the Writers and Publishers Network and the Ojai Film Festival.
