"Open Eyes" The Magic Realism of South FL Artist Anibal Fernandez at HALO Arts Miami, Wynwood

MIAMI - April 17, 2021 - Anibal Fernandez paints what he sees and also what he imagines. His Magic Realism canvases intrigue viewers with their bold outlines of realistic objects entwined with images of magic, myth, and fantasy.

This painting style reflects the tradition of Magic Realism that sprang up in Latin American literature during the 20th century; Fernandez extends those concepts into art.

"My artwork comes to me from everyday living as I bring ideas together," Fernandez explains on his website. "I interpret the world through the eyes of my paintings—to share what I have learned."

For the first time in the United States, Fernandez's Magic Realism work will be on view at Halo Arts in Wynwood, Miami, starting at 6 pm Saturday, April 17 at 411 NW 36th Street in Wynwood, Miami. Admission is free.

The acrylic and oil canvases in "Open Eyes" center around the human eye looking straight at the viewer. In each painting, the human eye, usually boldly outlined in black, is surrounded by other images that require imagination to absorb and interpret. Sometimes the story is very evident; at other times, it is left to the viewer to tease out the meaning of the objects, shapes, or designs surrounding the eye and/or partially disguising it.

Clearly, Fernandez's Magic Realism paintings are provocative. They resist giving the whole story. They can be interpreted in many ways. They provide an interactive experience that requires the viewer to use imagination for full appreciation.
