Scientists have known for decades that broad-spectrum, germicidal UV light has the capacity to kill microbes. Hospitals and laboratories often use UV light to sterilize tools and other equipment. UV has three wavelength categories: UV-A and UV-B (for tanning beds), and UV-C. UV-C is a short-wavelength, ultraviolet light that breaks apart germ DNA, leaving it unable to function or reproduce.
