SILVER SPRING, Md. - Feb. 29, 2020 - In a groundbreaking relationship, the Maryland Neighborhood Exchange is partnering with San Francisco based Wefunder to grow grassroots investment crowdfunding in Maryland. The first campaign of this innovative collaboration will be focused on Neighborhood Sun, the Maryland-based leader in clean, affordable solar energy. Through this unique partnership, residents across the state will be able to take some ownership over their sustainable energy future by shifting a small portion of their savings and investments to support this up and coming business.

Launched by Neighborhood Associates Corporation and the local nonprofit initiative, Community Wealth Builders, The Maryland Neighborhood Exchange is the first locally focused investment crowdfunding platform in the nation. The Exchange will be connecting great local businesses that are seeking growth capital, like Neighborhood Sun, with residents of the communities they serve – thus giving people the chance to earn positive returns while helping to strengthen the local economy. This hyper-local form of crowdfunding is common on the west coast of the United States but is new to the east coast.

Neighborhood Sun is a Certified B Corp whose mission is to build stronger communities and empower neighborhoods to choose clean, renewable energy that costs less than their current, dirty electricity. They provide shared solar to residents who can't have, or don't want solar panels on their homes. Apartment residents, condo-dwellers, small businesses and homeowners alike can all get a share of the electricity that is generated from panels that are installed off-site, and now they can get a share of the company's future as well.




The Maryland Neighborhood Exchange facilitates grassroots investing in the state's most promising locally owned business enterprises. As such, it promises to help local businesses access needed growth capital (thus fostering business and job growth across the state) while forging stronger connections between businesses, their customers, and the surrounding community as they all become invested together in the businesses' success. The ultimate goal is to help nurture a stronger, more sustainable local economy characterized by vibrant, locally owned, community focused businesses.
