US Embassy terrorist bombing survivor publishes memoir about life after trauma

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Nov. 25, 2019 - The course of Yasemin Pressley's life changed forever on August 7, 1998. On that day, the Turkish woman and her American husband Frank were working inside the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya when it was bombed by Al-Qaeda terrorists, killing 213 people.

Yasemin and Frank escaped with their lives, but not without damage: Frank sustained extensive physical injuries requiring ongoing treatment. Yasemin's scrapes and bruises hid a deeper anguish in the form of severe post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.

After a decades-long journey of recovery, Pressley is now sharing her story in the highly anticipated memoir "A Dance Amongst the Flames: A Young Foreign-Born Mom's Journey from Terrorist Attack and US Government Victimization to Triumph over Severe PTSD," available in paperback and eBook formats.

A Dance Amongst the Flames is a gripping narrative centered on Yasemin and Frank, a newlywed couple who have it all: family, friends, security, and meaningful jobs with the U.S. State Department. Everything changes after the Al-Qaeda terrorist attack of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. Frank, critically injured and barely hanging on, is flown to Germany for hospitalization, while Yasemin is left behind to struggle with trauma in the fallout.

When she finally reaches Frank's hospital bedside in Germany, Yasemin discovers that she is expecting their third child. What would normally be joyous news is tinged with uncertainty and fear as an overwhelmed Yasemin struggles to help her husband survive while protecting the child growing inside her.

Through her heart-breaking journey with PTSD, Frank's endless surgeries, and outright neglect from U.S. State Department, Yasemin discovers she is on a downward spiral. It isn't until she turns to faith for answers in the face of the State Department's neglect that Yasemin surmounts her illness, learning to reject fear as she and her family carve out a new path.

"It is thanks to God that we found the strength not just to survive but to triumph over adversity," Yasemin said. "I want my story to inspire others who experience PTSD to find hope."
