Learning the Ropes: Canadian Healthcare System Navigation 101

VICTORIA, British Columbia - Oct. 23, 2019 - Science educator and family caregiver Beth Campbell Duke is launching a new online short course to help patients and families 'learn the ropes' of navigating our healthcare system. Beth and her husband Tony have extensive lived expertise in navigating our siloed healthcare systems.

'Tony had a terminal lung disease that progressed over a number of years and then he had a lung transplant.' explains Beth. 'We went into this thinking we had one healthcare system in BC. We were really not prepared to deal with all of the separate systems that make up our healthcare system. We discovered that doctors, specialists, hospitals and community-based programs are their own separate entities. And that they often have difficulty sharing health records and other information.'

Beth explained that the complexity of healthcare means that patients and families often find themselves developing their own systems for finding, organizing and sharing information with all the people on their healthcare teams.

'Like others, our family has benefited from the miraculous interventions the health system is capable of, and we've also struggled at the hands of an outdated system that just isn't set up to cope with what we're asking it to do.' says Campbell Duke. The extra treatment burden that patients and families bear comes with precious little training or support. 'We're too often just expected to know what to do. We really are the only ones in the system who navigate among all of the silos - among physicians, among community-based programs and even among Health Authorities.

As a result of their own healthcare journey, Beth has developed a 4-week online short course to assist patients and families looking for help. Her 'Learning the Ropes' course covers working with your healthcare team, developing your support networks, looking after yourself and getting your legal and financial documents and affairs organized. A new course begins the first week of every month. It's delivered online and includes a weekly class discussion and members-only discussion boards.
