Sine Nomine Associates, Inc. Announces OpenAFS Management Tool, "CellCC"

BERRYVILLE, Va. - Oct. 21, 2019 - Sine Nomine Associates, Inc., a leader in Open Source development and support, proudly announces the release of CellCC ("cell carbon-copy"), a set of tools and daemons to help IT System Administrators synchronize volumes between AFS cells. AFS is a distributed network filesystem; more information on AFS can be found on http://www.openafs.org/

"Why would you want to synchronize volumes between AFS cells?", asks Michael Meffie, Principal Engineer for OpenAFS? He explains, "A single organization may have multiple AFS cells under its control for any number of reasons, including 1) compartmentalizing AFS traffic or failures, 2) raising the max number of RO sites, or 3) delegating cell maintenance duties." In such a scenario, one may wish to release a volume to multiple cells. For example, one may want to access an application in AFS from any one of the local cells in that organization, without needing to access any of the other "remote" cells.

CellCC can act as an extended "vos release" in such setups. CellCC synchronizes volumes from a "source" AFS cell to a number of "destinations" AFS cells, relying on plain "vos release" to synchronize volumes within a single AFS cell. CellCC also fortifies against failures, allowing for automatic retries of operations and is capable of detailed status reporting.

CellCC is primarily written in Perl; it uses remctl commands and a SQL database for network communication. It is released under the terms of the ISC (Open Source) License. While anybody can download and use the tool from github at no charge, commercial support can be obtained by Sine Nomine Associates upon request. With CellCC, the company made a significant contribution to the OpenAFS ecosystem, and handed IT System Administrators another useful tool to enrich their tool boxes.

Margarete Ziemer, CEO, emphasizes: "We sincerely thank all our past and current customers and our associates. We are always ready to tackle your problems with custom solutions, particularly in the Open Source space."
