JMA Pilani Rajasthan Conducts Sanskrit Shloka Competition

Renowned English orientalist, jurist and philologist Sir William Jones had postulated in 1786 the common ancestry of Sanskrit, Latin, and Greek as well as their relationship with the Gothic, Celtic, and Persian languages. All over the world, ancient classical languages like Greek and Latin continue to be studied even though they happen to be dead languages as they fell in disuse long ago. However, Sanskrit is not spoken anywhere in India today except one or two villages in South India.

Sanskrit is perhaps the oldest language in the world to be recorded. Classical Sanskrit which developed from the Vedic period held sway from about 500 BC to about 1000 AD. Sanskrit is undoubtedly the repository of India’s cultural, literary, philosophical and scientific heritage and there can be no quarrel with attempts for its promotion. Sanskrit Language has been the most important medium in lending continuity to Indian civilization. In its heyday it was spoken and used in all regions of India.

Many languages in India have taken freely from Sanskrit vocabulary and their literature is permeated with the Sanskrit heritage. It is known that in terms of its phonetics, vocabulary, grammar and the Devanagari script, Sanskrit becomes a wonderfully efficient vehicle of communication. Recent empirical studies about the relative suitability of different languages and scripts for use in Computer programming and operation have indicated that Sanskrit in devanagari script was not only the most suitable but also that it perfectly satisfied every requirement.

Considering the importance of Sanskrit, Smt Jamuna Mishra Academy – JMA established in 2004 at Pilani affiliated to Rajastan Board of Secondary Education RBSE conducts a Sanskrit shloka recitation competition every year for the enrolled students. The students are divided into two groups with Group – I having children from class V to VII and Group – II having children from ClassVIII to X. For 2019, the shloka recitation competition was held in the Lecture Theatre of the School on 07 Sep in which over 50 students participated.

In the first Group Deepika Rungta (VII B), Lavanya (V A) bagged the first two positions while and Bhagyashree and Nupur both from VII A shared the third position. In the second Group Nishit (IX B), Priya Poonia (X B) and Harshit (VIII B) bagged the top three positions respectively. After the competition, the students and teachers of JMA were seen with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a shining jewel in the crown among the schools at Pilani.
