Uk Company Introduces Agritech Solutions For Local Smallholder Farmers In Botswana

September 11, 2019 - Smallholder farmers across the country will benefit from TIOMANgrow created by TIOMAN Ltd a UK private based company that provides technical support in Agriculture, using smartphones.

The partnership unveiled last week us with I Can Farm Global that has been working with other young farmers to groom them in the terms of quality products and sourcing out markets for them.

The new initiative provides free live SMS notifications with daily weather reports, pest and disease warning and with the support of the Botswana Government crop import restrictions information, according to the Founder of I Can Grow Global, Stan Martin. The partnership also provides field training, technical support through a call center and social media groups, routes to market and the ability for smallholders to apply for asset-based loans.

Martin explains that TIOMANgrow is an exclusive membership for smallholders supported by a network of agents known as TiG Agents. “The TiG agents visit the smallholders in their farms, equipped with smart phones to sign up the smallholders to the membership using the TIOMANgrow App”. Martin said.

The application process captures information on the smallholder, including which crops they are growing, when they will be available to harvest, the location and other valuable information. TIOMANgrow platform supported by I Can Farm Global in Botswana is also expected to provide employment, especially for the youth in rural locations as well as helping smallholders to improve yields and market access. Martin said that now tomatoes are in huge demand in the country and through this platform farmers can enrol and gain value knowledge to plant and sell. He added that their trainings are effective and help farmers to improve their farming skills.

CEO at I Can Farm Global, Tshephang Dodile was confident that the initiative will help in boosting Botswana’s food security and help with job creation. “This partnership brings opportunities, job creation and hope to our existing smallholders and youth venturing into farming and seeing such technology being implemented in Botswana brings hope for the future to our farmers and the country at large” she said.

She added that the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) expects that the global food demand to rise by 50 percent until 2050, while also suggesting that by some estimates, if nothing is done to change the present trends, then there could be a problem. “The research shows that is nothing is done, then 1.7 billion farmers would be forced to leave Agriculture over the next few decades, therefore bringing AgriTech solutions to the people who need them the most, the smallholder farmers, could reverse this trend and allow them to stay competitive” said Dodile.

CEO of TIOMAN Polly Galita applauded I Can Farm Global, saying that the trainings and close relationships they build and maintain with smallholders are incredible. “We are delighted to have this partnership with I Can Farm Global, as it is a fitting private partnership of strength, professionalism and high that that I Can Farm Global bring to Botswana”, she said.

“Through this partnership, we seek to achieve validated information from our smallholders, whilst providing them with a sustainable income”, said Galita.
