NEW YORK - Aug. 20, 2019 - Global Kids (GK) announces it has been awarded a new grant from the National Science Foundation. The proceeds will support Global Kids' 18-month pilot study titled Making Cultural Heritage: Engaging Youth in Planning for the Restoration of Community Heritage Sites Through the Use of Citizen Science and Maker Practices. In partnership with Adelphi University, the study focuses on youth, who are traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields, gaining hands-on experience in understanding local and global issues through informal STEM learning. Through Making Cultural Heritage, the youth will be engaged in culturally relevant learning to explore and reimagine damaged UNESCO World Heritage Sites, connecting citizen science and maker technologies. Students will then focus their learning from these global projects to explore local areas of cultural significance to preserve and protect public spaces in their communities.
Global Kids Executive Director, Evie Hantzopoulos will oversee the pilot study along with co-primary investigators Dr. Elizabeth Bishop from GK and Dr. Tracy Hogan and Dr. Cindy Maguire from Adelphi. Representatives from other organizations such as Princeton University and the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) will advise the project.
This grant is received through the National Science Foundation's Advancing Informal STEM Learning (ASIL) program which seeks to advance new opportunities in the development of STEM learning, provide pathways for broadening engagement in STEM for all ages, and further progress innovative research of STEM.
