Nothing quite makes the mouth water like a warm donut that melts upon the first bite. Although donuts are traditionally thought of as a breakfast food, American culture has transformed this delicious treat into a dessert in and of itself. The following article details a quick and easy way to make this wonderful treat in your own home. To make doughnuts:

Step 1
Gather your ingredients. In order to make doughnuts yourself, you will need the following ingredients:

8 cups of flour
1 package of yeast
1 cup of sugar
3 egg yolks
1 tablespoon of salt
2 cups of milk
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1/2 cup of unsalted butter
1/2 cup of potatoes (mashed)
1/4 cup of water
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda

Step 2
Heat the milk mixture. Start off by scalding the milk and then adding the butter, sugar, and salt. Stir these ingredients together and then let them cool for awhile until they are about room temperature.

Step 3

Combine the next batch of ingredients. After the milk mixture has cooled, stir in the yeast, baking soda, baking powder, egg yolks, mashed potatoes, and only 2 cups of the flour. Beat these ingredients together for a few minutes until they are a smooth texture.

Step 4
Add the remaining flour. From here, you will want to add the rest of the flour to the mixture, and continue to beat the ingredients until they form a soft, doughy mass.

Step 5
Let the dough rise. Place the soft dough in a greased or buttered bowl and spread a little extra butter over the top of the dough. Set the bowl aside, and let it rise for about 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

Step 6
Shape the donuts. Once the dough has risen for about two hours, roll it out, cut it, and shape it into appropriate donut-sized pieces. A doughnut cutter makes this job easy, but it isn't necessary to get the job done. After you have made all the dough into donuts, set the donuts aside and let them rise for another hour.

Step 7
Fry the donuts. Place each donut in a pot of hot oil or a deep fryer. Leave them in the oil until they are a golden-brown color, and then pull them out to cool off a bit.

Step 8
Top the donut. If you just want to eat the donut plain, then this step is not necessary. However, a nice glaze, frosting, or even a few sprinkles help to finish the donut off and turn it into a sweet treat that won't easily be forgotten.

From sweet and sugary to crispy and chocolaty, a homemade batch of donuts is sure to please everyone. Give this simple recipe a try, and impress everyone with your cooking prowess and knack for satisfying a sweet tooth.
