Retailer Says Using Reusable Shopping Bags Isn’t Enough for the Environment

Major retailers all over the nation are wising up to the fact that consumers just don't want to use plastic bags anymore. There has been plenty of news about how plastic bags are not only harming the environment, but are collecting in the oceans and killing thousands of marine animals every year. And all of this publicity has made sales in the reusable shopping bag industry explode. Stores like Costco, which is known for its supply of cardboard boxes that shoppers can use to carry out their purchases, has jumped on the bandwagon and is considering eliminating the boxes and replacing them with reusable bags. Other stores like Ikea, Whole Foods, and Stop & Shop have all implemented the practice, and now offer the reusable shopping bags to customers for a small fee.

€œThe problem with this," says a retailer of [cute reusable shopping bags](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WFM8H2Y/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p79_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1CPPC02HKXW1FYZQH52Q&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2118394622&pf_rd_i=desktop) shaped like colorful fruit, €œis that consumers end up wasting our resources in other ways. They stop using plastic and paper bags, which is great, but then they become ardent consumers of reusable totes and don't realize the enormous footprint that leaves. If people really want to do all they can to help the environment, they should choose a few bags, and reuse them until they wear out."

And with studies showing that it takes over one hundred uses to cover the environmental impact of producing a reusable bag, he makes a lot of sense.

€œThe problem arises when retailers offer customers reusable bags for pennies. Instead of using a few quality bags, consumers are quickly building large collections of the bags, which in the end, doesn't really help the environment."

There have many bloggers in recent months who have blogged about €œreusable shopping bag addictions." These bloggers claim to be obsessed with the bags, and admit to having dozens of them in their homes. And judging by the comments left behind on those blogs, there are plenty of Americans who can relate.

€œLook," says the retailer. €œEveryone wants to do their part for the environment, but it's important for people to make choices that allow them to do that. It's true that [quality reusable shopping bags](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WFM8H2Y/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p79_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1CPPC02HKXW1FYZQH52Q&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2118394622&pf_rd_i=desktop) are a critical part of reducing unnecessary waste in the world, but if people don't use them conservatively, they will soon begin piling up in our landfills just like the bags we're trying to replace."
