If the project does not reach its budget by the deadline, it forfeits all of the money it raised.

Several websites boast of having upwards of 20,000 projects listed. Some projects raise hundreds of thousands of dollars. But such success is rare. “The websites hype their success stories. They sign people and then stack the projects on top of one another, hundreds of pages down. It's almost impossible to get noticed,” Black says. “And when the deadline approaches it makes it all the more a grueling experience to raise your funds.”
