The Law on Foreigners regulates the entry and conditions of stay for foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria and in European Community. Under its provisions, foreigners have the right to reside in the Republic of Bulgaria and European Community both for short-term and long-term purposes. A foreigner may cross the border of the Republic of Bulgaria only if they hold the necessary visa, ID or just passport, unless the law dictates differently.

Bulgaria and the Schengen Area
Joining the Schengen area is a key priority of our country. The Bulgarian government is highly committed to fulfilling this national objective. A well functioning coordination between ministries and institutions has been established to this end on both political and expert levels.
Since joining the EU, Bulgaria has focused on meeting the high Schengen standards and securing reliable external borders. In order to meet the Schengen criteria, Bulgaria undertook all necessary measures in oder to align the national and the European legal systems. This was achieved by updating our international base of treaties, providing the relevant state-of-the-art technical equipment and infrastructure and enhancing the administrative capacity whereby our country uses the best practice of the EU member states.
Currently Bulgaria issues national visas only. Those visas do not give their holders the right to enter the Schengen area. There is however, a visa-free regime for holders of Schengen visas for a stay in Bulgaria for up to 90 days.
Bulgaria and the European Unions Common Visa Policy
Since 1 January 2007 the Republic of Bulgaria has been enforcing the European Unions Common Visa Policy.
Types of visas:
1. Airport transit visa type A
It can be with either single, double or in exceptional cases, a multiple validity for up to 3 months after the date of issue. A person who is issued an airport transfer visa is not admitted to the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria and his/her movement is restricted only to the transit area of the airport. This visa gives the person the right to leave the aircraft when it makes a scheduled landing at a Bulgarian airport or a change their flight if necessary. Applicants are required to present a flight reservation.
The only people who need to apply for such types of visas are the passport or other travel documents holders of the following countries: Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, and Sudan.
2. Transit visa type B
It can be a single, double or a multiple entry visa, valid for 3, 6 and 12 months after the date of issue. It is issued to a foreign person who enters the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria from one country en route to another country. It allows entering the country and a maximum stay of up to 24 hours in Bulgaria. The multiple transit visa allows entering the country for up to 90 times within each period of 6 months.
3. Short entry visa type C
It can be a single or multiple entry visa, valid for 3, 6 and 12 months following the date of issue. It is issued to foreign persons who travel to Bulgaria for tourism, on business trips or private visits. It allows one or multiple entries into the country and a stay not exceeding 90 days within each period of 6 months. Multiple entry visas are issued only to a foreign person who satisfies one or more of these conditions:
- maintains regular business contacts with companies registered in Bulgaria;
- has invested more than 32 000 EUR or its equivalent in another currency in the Republic of Bulgaria and there is a document from the Bulgarian Agency for Foreign Investment confirming this;
